I was invited to join the company by my father in 1976 after qualifying, some years earlier, as a chartered accountant. For the first 2 years I acted in a non- executive capacity but then joined the company full time in 1978 when we purchased an independent brush making company dating back to 1753 - Sam’l Woodcock & Sons Ltd - based in Sheffield.
In 1980 I merged the 2 companies fully by expanding the Sunderland factory and closing the Sheffield premises. Our largest contract at that time and for quite some years after entailed us supplying every power station in the country with all their brush requirements.
This was also a period of growth in North Sea Oil which we had been a supplier to from the very first days and led to our involvement in pipeline maintenance. This is still a very important sector of our business. As the emerging countries e.g. China took a greater part of our traditional manufacturing so we moved more into technical brushes but do still offer today a comprehensive range to suit virtually any industry.
I stepped down as Managing Director (& 5th generation to lead the company) in 2005 and took on the role of Finance Director which enables me to continue to work with people I very much like and admire and in an industry I very much enjoy.
