My career in the brush trade began when I joined the family business Davis Burrow & Sons Ltd in Leeds. Initially I was involved in manufacturing then progressed to sales. In 1984 I became Managing Director but continued to spend time visiting customers.
In 1999 the opportunity arose to sell the business to Cottam Brush, and I took on the role of Sales Agent therefore enabling me to continue my preferred role in field sales, developing business with customers of both businesses.
I remain a self employed Sales Agent, covering the North of England and the Midlands.
Cottam are an excellent principal to represent as they have a proven reputation in the industry for providing good products and service.

I joined Cottams back in 1979 and one of my first jobs was trimming and assembling brushes. After many years of working in different departments I developed an extensive knowledge of processes and methods of manufacturing brushes.
Now (just a few years on) my role as Process Engineer involves creating manufacturing methods and work instructions, calculating quotes, and creating product designs for customer needs.
I was invited to join the company by my father in 1976 after qualifying, some years earlier, as a chartered accountant. For the first 2 years I acted in a non- executive capacity but then joined the company full time in 1978 when we purchased an independent brush making company dating back to 1753 - Sam’l Woodcock & Sons Ltd - based in Sheffield.
In 1980 I merged the 2 companies fully by expanding the Sunderland factory and closing the Sheffield premises. Our largest contract at that time and for quite some years after entailed us supplying every power station in the country with all their brush requirements.
This was also a period of growth in North Sea Oil which we had been a supplier to from the very first days and led to our involvement in pipeline maintenance. This is still a very important sector of our business. As the emerging countries e.g. China took a greater part of our traditional manufacturing so we moved more into technical brushes but do still offer today a comprehensive range to suit virtually any industry.
I stepped down as Managing Director (& 5th generation to lead the company) in 2005 and took on the role of Finance Director which enables me to continue to work with people I very much like and admire and in an industry I very much enjoy.

Cottam is a family company and as such I've been around the business all my life. Starting in a professional capacity in 2002 as an Engineering graduate I’ve been MD since 2005.
Our business was founded back in 1858 by Samuel Cottam (my great great great grandfather) and I’m now the 6th generation of the family at the helm. Amazingly we have 3 generations on our Board of Directors right now.
We moved to our fantastic new factory in 2007 and it’s as fresh now as the day we moved in. We love to show off what we do so please come and have a look.
My job now is to ensure that we grow the business; with a great team and a strong plan in place we're already on our way. Whether you are working with our Technical Solutions, Brushware Supplies or Supply Chain Management team I hope that you find us friendly, innovative, and open for business.
Outside work I love to spend time with my wife Jennifer and my two boys Frank and Max.
I enjoy my job and I'm always happy to chat about collaboration opportunities, business ideas and of course, brushes! My contact details are below or you can catch me on twitter @cottam_ben.
I joined the team at Cottam in 2002 working in the purchasing and quality functions before moving into sales.
I've had loads of great times with Cottam but the ones that really stand out are collecting an award for Customer Service on behalf of the company, developing our digital quality system and getting thoroughly soaked as part of Team Cottam in a charity It's a Knockout competition!
With over 30 years’ experience with Cottam (including production, warehousing, logistics and sales/customer relations role) I have now specialised in working with the water treatment industry.
